Youth Course

A 2 day Introduction to Freediving Course for 12-16 year-olds - $590

The SSI Beginner Freediving Course, tailored to suit younger freedivers. It includes all the key information to develop knowledgable, confident and safe freedivers, but with a focus on ocean discovery and exploration. This course will enable divers to feel confident in the ocean, learn how to safely hold their breath and dive to depths of up to 12 metres, as well as teaching them about the diverse wildlife that inhabit our shores here in Sydney. The course teaches mindfulness and relaxation techniques that can not only be used to freedive effectively, but can also be used in every day life to relieve stress and anxiety.

This course is taught by Rosie Richards - a certified SSI level 2 Freediving Instructor and a former secondary school teacher & lifeguard with a current Working With Children Check, and will be in groups of no more than 4 students.

Suitable for:

  • Complete beginners looking to improve their ocean confidence

  • Those already confident in the water, looking for a fun and safe way to explore the ocean

  • Surfers wanting to improve their underwater tolerance

  • Those wanting to learn mindfulness & relaxation skills to relieve stress and axiety

Requirements:

  • Aged 12-16

  • Able to swim at least 200m unassisted

  • Not adverse to being out of your comfort zone!

Course outline:

Day 1:

  • Theory session - learn about what happens to our bodies when we dive underwater and about our bodies natural adaptations that allow us to feedive safely.

  • Breath-work session - learn mindfulness and visualisation techniques to allow us to relax and conserve oxygen whilst we hold our breath.

  • Pool session - put your new knowledge to the test in the pool where we will learn how to safely hold our breath underwater, effective finning technique & streamlining for freediving as well as safety and rescue procedures.

    Day 2:

  • Ocean depth session 1: Learn the foundation skills of depth training whilst working on equalisation skills and relaxation in the water

  • Lunch/beach picnic & marine life identification session

  • Ocean depth session 2: Progress your freediving skills by refining your technique & performing an in-water rescue

  • Fun dive & Marine Life Identification - Explore one of Sydney’s most abundant Marine Reserves with a guided snorkellng/freediving session.
