Each year, thousands of mobula rays gather in the warm, nutrient-rich waters of the Sea of Cortez, creating one of the ocean's most spectacular wildlife events. Often gathering in enormous swirling fevers, the rays can be seen leaping from the water and displaying fascinating behaviours. Visiting Baja during this seasonal migration gives us the opportunity to witness this extraordinary natural spectacle in one of the most biodiverse marine environments on the planet.

The Sea of Cortez is renowned for its incredible marine biodiversity. Alongside the mobula rays, we may encounter dolphins, orcas, humpback whales, blue whales, whale sharks, sea lions and a variety of other marine life. Wildlife encounters are never guaranteed, but the nutrient-rich waters of Baja offer some truly exceptional opportunities to experience the ocean's megafauna.

No. While the Sea of Cortez is renowned for its incredible marine biodiversity and June coincides with the seasonal mobula ray migration, wildlife encounters can never be guaranteed. Marine animals are wild and move freely through the ocean, so sightings will always depend on natural conditions and their movements. We'll spend five full days exploring known hotspots, giving us the best opportunity to encounter mobula rays and the incredible megafauna that call these waters home. However, the animals' comfort and wellbeing will always be our first priority. We follow responsible wildlife interaction practices and never chase, crowd or interfere with marine life to get a closer encounter.

No previous freediving certification is required. The trip is open to confident snorkellers and freedivers of all experience levels, so you don't need to be a certified freediver to join us. However, you must be a strong swimmer and comfortable swimming in deep, open water, as all ocean activities take place offshore and involve full days on the boat.

Yes! Mexico is one of our favourite places to travel, and the diving is just one of the reasons we love coming back. La Ventana is a small, laid-back coastal town with beautiful beaches, incredible local cuisine and some fantastic local restaurants. If you fancy exploring beyond the water, there are also stunning cactus forests nearby, which you can explore on foot, by bike or motorbike. It's the perfect place to slow down after big days on the water, enjoy the surroundings and experience a different side of Mexico.
If you're thinking of extending your trip, we're also happy to recommend some of our other favourite places to visit in Mexico!

La Ventana is a small coastal town popular with travellers, divers and kitesurfers. Our trip is organised so that airport transfers, accommodation and daily boat excursions are all taken care of, meaning you won't need to worry about getting around independently. We also work with trusted local operators who know the area well. You'll be staying in beautiful beachfront accommodation with the rest of the group, and we always have other solo travellers joining our trips, so you'll be in good company. As with any international destination, we recommend taking sensible precautions and being aware of your surroundings.

Eunoia trips are female-led and limited to a small group of just eight guests, allowing for a more personal experience. We partner with a local dive company that we've worked with and trusted over numerous years, bringing valuable local knowledge and experience to our time on the water. With five private boat charters, we'll have the flexibility to explore the Sea of Cortez and spend plenty of time in the water, away from the crowds of larger group tours. We'll also be staying at what we believe is the best accommodation in La Ventana, with beautiful beachside cabins and excellent facilities. Whether you're an experienced freediver or a confident snorkeller, the trip is designed to give you the freedom to enjoy these incredible marine encounters at your own pace.

Why Choose Eunoia?
There are a number of ways to experience Baja - but none quite like this. Here’s what sets our trip apart:
Small Groups, Big Encounters: We keep our groups to just 6 guests to ensure a more personal, flexible, and ethical experience. Smaller numbers mean better chances for meaningful encounters with wildlife - from vast schools of mobula rays to the rare chance of spotting orcas.
Timed for Peak Mobula Season: This trip is timed at the peak of the mobula migration, when thousands of rays gather off Baja’s coast. Combined with possible sightings of dolphins, sea lions, orcas, and whales, this is the ultimate marine wildlife experience.
Local Knowledge – Shared: We’ve spent time in Baja and know it well - from the best locations to stay and places to eat, to the patterns of the sea and its wildlife. This isn’t a generic tour, but a carefully crafted experience led by people who know and love this place, with sustainability and animal respect at its core.
Eco-Luxe Baja Vibes: Stay in beautifully curated eco-accommodation near the Sea of Cortez - think peaceful desert landscapes, ocean views, and laid-back Mexican charm. With beach access, hammock time, and sunset margaritas, it’s the perfect place to unwind between ocean adventures.
Inclusive, Not Intimidating: You don’t need to be a freediving pro or have the perfect duck dive - just a love of the ocean and confidence in deep water. Our trips welcome freedivers, snorkelers, and ocean lovers of all levels.
